VOY: “Equinox: Part 1 & 2”

Date: January 9, 2021

Season 5, Episode 25 and Season 6, Episode 1

Music Video of the Day:

“Hey kid, don’t listen to your head It only fills you with dread and with doubt”… Blink-182’s “Happy Days”.

Interstellar News: Sorry for being absent the last few days. Between what’s happening in the real world and my personal life, it’s been a rough few days.

TL;DR: Voyager encounters the Equinox, another Federation ship taken in by the Caretaker and lost in the DQ years before. The Equinox has been under attack by aliens from another realm, but it comes to light they’ve been using these aliens for fuel. Many of the Equinox crew escape back to their ship with Seven, the Doctor, and a field generator while the other EMH has infiltrated Voyager. Chakotay and Janeway get into it on several occasions, Voyager figures out a way to connect with the attacking aliens, and the captain of the Equinox has a last minute change of heart but their first officer leads a mutiny. The captain goes down with his ship in order to save Voyager and what is left of his crew, they are all put under supervision, and Seven offers to help the EMH install security protocols.

Favorite Quote:

Ransom: You know, once we get our enhanced warp drive back online, we’ll be on our way home, but it’ll still take months to get there. You can spend that time in the brig, or you can become part of this crew. I’d prefer the latter.

Seven of Nine: I’d prefer the brig.

Ransom: You know, Janeway’s not the only Captain who can help you explore your humanity.

Seven of Nine: You would be an inferior role model.

Seven with the snappy comebacks.
Red Chevrolet Equinox, side profile
This is not the Equinox you were looking for.

“You’re cute when you’re jealous.”: Part 1 is all about figuring out what the crew of the Equinox is up to, listening to their story, and also seeing how another ship adapted to the DQ. I really thought we were going to find out more about Caretaker and there would be similar stories to how they got through Kazon, Borg, and other hostile territory. Instead we get Torres’s old boyfriend, who is never quite the good guy he seems at first, a blonde for Chakotay who ultimately breaks his heart, a gentle giant for Seven who also betrays the trust, and Captain Ransom who knows how to verbally spar with Janeway. We also get to see how the other half lives when you have to make more sacrifices due to a smaller crew or more limited resources. The best part of this first part is how Chakotay deals with the crewman who clearly has PTSD and he’s just such a wonderful first officer.

A purple flower blooms
This was also not the equinox you were looking for…

“Holodeck 2, tomorrow, 1600 hours. Just you, me, and a tuning fork.”: Part 2 brings us to a conclusion that I both saw coming and didn’t. Of course the Equinox was going to be destroyed somehow, I knew that. What I didn’t see coming was some of the crew joining Voyager. It’s a great way to add some new faces, bring some new Starfleet drama onto the ship, and make up for some of the crew that have been lost along the way. Ransom has a change of heart, because Janeway has that effect on people, and he goes down with his ship as a penance for all the bad that he’s done. His first officer and some of the others who were just looking to get home more quickly also have karma swiftly bite them in the ass, but playing Devil’s advocate I just can’t blame them on some level. The rift between Janeway and Chakotay is a mile long, and for once Chakotay is 1000% correct and Janeway is just plain wrong. Seeing the EMH work double duty, especially when ours has his ethical subroutine deleted, is creepy and evil and he plays it well. No one suspects the evil EMH to be on Voyager and Seven works so well with what she is given once our doctor is turned.

As a season finale, season opener two-parter, this wasn’t as compelling as it could be… so this earns 6 games of Ticket to Ride.

“Bill & Ted” Trilogy

Date: January 6, 2021

Music Video of the day:

“Let’s do the time warp again…”

Interstellar News: The last three days the husband person and I watched the Bill & Ted trilogy of Excellent Adventure, Bogus Journey, and Face the Music. There’s travel throughout space and time, so that makes it Star Trek adjacent. Also, as a bonus, there’s a clip from “Arena” in the second movie, which is totally Trek related! Don’t read ahead if you haven’t watched all three films as I’m sure there are spoilers abound.

Bill & Ted's Excellent adventure movie poster
“All we are is dust in the wind.”
“Iron Maiden? Excellent!”

“Strange things are afoot at the Circle K.”: I have watched the original movie a fair number of times in my life. I’ve always loved the boys for their good-hearted nature, their love for music, and their purity of spirit as they endeavor not only to pass their history class but also to save the world. George Carlin has been a favorite comedian of mine since I first discovered him and I’m only sad he’s not in the movie more. This film truly sets us up for a totally excellent trilogy and pokes fun of the absurdity of time travel and what the future will look like. This movie also gives me some wonderful quotes I use all the time, aside from the ones I’ve mentioned previously. I will occasionally yell “San Dimas High School football rules!” when I can’t think of something to say and I frequently sign off with “be excellent to each other and party on dudes”. This is my favorite of the trilogy and earns itself a 69, dudes.

Bill & Ted;s Bogus Journey movie poster
“You have sank my battleship!”
“How’s it hanging, Death?”

“Station!”: A most excellent sequel that I have only seen a handful of times. George Carlin is back, but in the movie even less than the first one. The “bad guy” is played by Hans from The Mighty Ducks and so it’s hard for me to take him seriously, especially when he doesn’t have a very compelling back story. The evil robots are wonderfully awful and the princesses are fantastic as always. I love how the boys are respectful of their chaste girlfriends and are horrified when their evil robot selves try to force the girls to “put out”. One thing that I disliked is the end where the boys and the princesses were supposedly away for 16 months but only left for a few minutes, because time is supposed to keep rolling in San Dimas. However Death is hysterical, Station is awesome, and the credits tell a wonderful story that makes you think the boys have fulfilled their destiny. It may be my least favorite in the trilogy, but I still always watch it and adore it because it is absolutely not a bad movie… just not as good at the one before it or the one after it. Best out of 7, right dudes?

Bill & Ted face the music movie poster
“That is a robot in hell”
“I mean, we’re a couple of couples..”
“Did you say reality as we know it?”

“Sometimes things don’t make sense until the end of the story.”: This was an absolute delight to watch, especially in 2021 after the shenanigans of 2020. There are so many great callbacks to the two previous movies, including Missy and Ted’s dad and brother. There was even a callback to “69” when they were dialing the phone number at the end, and the two most mature dads on the planet didn’t even giggle! The daughters are most excellent and even though I saw them being the ones to put everything together, I still teared up at the end because it was a beautiful moment and everyone acted their asses off brilliantly. The dads (and moms) were there to support the daughters in the end and it was absolutely wonderful how everything came together. They were able to bring diversity and updates to the cast without making it seem like it was forced and they still kept the Bill & Ted feel with time travel, travel to the great beyond, and jiving with the music. There were loser thems, evil thems, old thems, and even super buff thems… and they were wonderful each time. I love the cameos, the acting, the music, and the message. What we need now more than ever is to unite, not divide. This one totally is infinitely excellent, dudes.

As always, be excellent to each other and party on dudes!

VOY: “Warhead”

Date: January 5, 2021

Season 5, Episode 24

Music Video of the Day:

“The perfect words never crossed my mind, ‘Cause there was nothing in there but you.” Snow Patrol sings “Signal Fire” on the Spider-Man 3 soundtrack.

Interstellar News: Today I worked my first “full” day in quite a while. My email wasn’t too terrible and it was nice to see some folks over Zoom.

TL;DR: Kim is on his fourth night shift in the big chair when they receive an automated distress call and change course. He leads the away team, with the Doctor, and find a warhead that believes it’s a person because it’s memory is damaged and it’s a very advanced artificial intelligence. They beam it aboard and discover it’s actually a weapon of mass destruction, but the Doctor advocates for transferring the AI into a holomatrix. During the transfer he’s taken over, the AI takes over Voyager, and eventually memories are restored where it realizes the war is over and it was launched accidentally. Kim eventually convinces the weapon to stand down, transfer itself back into the warhead, and destroy the other missiles that were also accidentally launched.

Favorite Quote:

Kim: I hope I made the right decision.

Chakotay: About changing course or waking me up?

Kim: Sorry, sir, but I thought…

Chakotay: Relax, Harry, you did the right thing on both counts.

Chakotay ribbing Kim, because Kim is still green around the edges.
R2D2 in a starship
The EMH talks to the warhead just like R2 and Obi Wan…

“Just promise me one thing. When you reach the top, you’ll remember all the little people you climbed over to get there.”: What promises to be an interesting side plot (the anniversary of Torres and Paris’s first date and Paris forgetting) is totally dropped after the first two minutes and that made me sad. The rest of the episode is interesting. Again we have the EMH getting excited for another AI entity, like in “Revulsion“, and again things get out of hand while the Doctor is trying to advocate for artificial life. This also has bits of “Prototype” in it, where Voyager is trying to do good and help a being in need… no matter how much organic material it does or does not have, and then they get held hostage. The difference here is that Kim is able to make a difference, which I really liked. He makes a lot of good decisions along the way and his commanding officers encourage and trust him. I didn’t hate this episode, but I also feel like it’s not really a “new” and exciting plot that I didn’t see coming. Well, I didn’t see it taking over the Doctor and that was fun… so that earns this episode 6 minutes and 28 seconds of “Two Step” by the Dave Matthews Band.

VOY: “Relativity”

Date: January 3, 2021

Season 5, Episode 23

Music Video of the Day:

I find your note the letters ran It said “I loved you, yeah I loved you”… “Molly (Sixteen Candles)” by Sponge

Interstellar News: I didn’t post yesterday, and that’s okay. I did my whole year of posting at least once a day and this year I am working on just finishing the task I started when I can.

TL;DR: This is a time travel episode where Seven is recruited by Braxton to stop Voyager from being destroyed by his future self. It involves Seven jumping to Janeway’s first day on the ship, to a Kazon attack about two years before she joined, and “present day”. Janeway also has to help at the very end, because reasons, and we all wind up with a headache.

None of this makes any sense (Barry Allen - THE FLASH)
Damn It Barry! I mean, Braxton!

Favorite Quote:

EMH: Next time your human physiology fails you, don’t consult the database. Just call me.

Seven of Nine: You are the database.

EMH: With two legs and a splendid bedside manner.

This is a wonderful exchange between two of my favorite characters.
Bruce McGill as D Day from ANIMAL HOUSE
Bruce McGill as D Day from Animal House… he plays Braxton.

“That’s the danger of self-diagnosis. Patients always assume the worst.”: Usually time travel makes my head hurt and this episode does in some ways and doesn’t in others. It’s an interesting way to bring Braxton back. I do always love Bruce McGill no matter who he is playing, and it’s fun to find out that he’s really the bad guy. The time distortions, like during the ping pong game, are interesting but I also don’t understand why the “weapon” is just now being activated when it was placed two years ago. There are also small little hints to Braxton’s descent into madness, but the bit at the end with Janeway helping for two seconds makes it feel like they are giving the Captain a chance to play action hero since Seven had the rest of the episode to do so. Nothing of consequence really happens in this episode, as Voyager no longer explodes, so it’s the end of a 5 day break for this episode and back tot he “real world” tomorrow.

Welcome to 2021

Date: January 1, 2021

Happy New Year! Let’s hope it’s better than 2020.

I obviously didn’t finish the challenge I set to myself one year ago today. My goal was to get through all of the “old”Trek and end my year with the three most recent reboot movies. I did, however, get quite far. As of today, I have completed:

SeriesSeasonsEpisodesTotal Time
The Original Series38067 hours, 4 minutes
The Animated Series2228 hours, 42 minutes
Movies916 hours, 51 minutes
The Next Generation7178136 hours and 28 minutes
Deep Space Nine7176132 hours
Voyageralmost 511688 hours and 56 minutes
Totals:24581~ 450 hours
450 hours or 19 whole days or… a whole year of Trek!
from left to right, Star Trek, TNG, DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise
Four out of five ain’t bad…

In 2021, I plan to finish Voyager, watch Nemesis, complete Enterprise, and watch all three of the Bad Robot reboots as was part of my original plan for last year. Once those are completed, I will work on Discovery, Picard, and anything else that is new.

I learned a great deal about myself this year. What I originally set for myself took too much time. Going forward, my reviews and posts will look different. I will still try to post every day, but it might be about things other than Star Trek. Once I’ve “caught up” with the current releases, I may consider another challenge. Either way, I hope you stay along for the ride.

I also wanted to thank several folks for putting up with my Trek challenge in 2020. Kyle, Keith, Work Mom, my fur babies, Will, and anyone else who sat through episodes with me or heard me writing well into the night.

TA Out.
