DS9: “Dax” and “The Passenger”

Date: June 9, 2020

Season 1, Episodes 7 and 8

Musical Accompaniment: Some piano covers.

Interstellar News: Had a sore throat all day, ugh.

Favorite Quote from “Dax”:

Renora: This will be an informal hearing, so I’m going to start with some informal advice. I am one hundred years old. I do not have time to squander listening to superfluous language. In short, I intend being here until supper, not senility. Understood?

Tandro: Understood, Madame Arbiter.

Renora, the arbiter, is fantastic.

Kick-ass Kira: “They must have given you the layout, which not only compromises Bajoran security, but also annoys us.”

So what had happened in “Dax” was…: O’Brien is off station so everyone is trying to fill his shoes. Bashir is striking out with Dax, as usual, but thankfully his stalker tendencies lead to him seeing Dax being kidnapped. They’re able to stop the ship but this leads to Dax being charged with treason and murder when she was Curzon, her last host. Dax is quiet for the entire episode, so it’s up to Sisko and the others to advocate for her, including calling a Bajoran arbiter to determine extradition, who is the most amazing character of the entire episode. Odo bullies Quark into shutting down the bar so they can use it for the hearing, gotta love using building codes as weapons.

Renora, the arbiter from Bajor
This is one amazing arbiter. Move over Judge Judy.

The hearing proceeds with both sides making really great arguments. Sisko argues that each new host is its own person and we find out more about the Trills and a bit more about both Curzon and Jadzia. Tandro argues that the Trill inside as well as the new host retain the memories and actions of the previous ones and why can’t she stand trial for something committed by at least half of her? The arbiter is fantastic through all of this. She’s a pip, sharp as a tack, and doesn’t let anyone get away with anything in her courtroom. Odo heads to Klaestron IV to do his own investigation where he discovers Curzon and the murdered man’s widow had an affair. The widow returns with Odo to explain that Curzon couldn’t have done all this because he was with her at the time and Tandro is back to square one with his investigation.

Harrison Ford as "The Fugitive"
*waves hands* This is not the fugitive you’re looking for…

…and then I found five dollars: I loved this as a vehicle to learn more about the Trills but absolutely hate that Dax, the character for whom the episode is named after, did absolutely nothing in the entire episode. Both Dax and Bashir could have hit their com badges at anytime and didn’t, leading to Dax almost being kidnapped for real. Sisko does a fine job in figuring out why, with a warrant and all Tandro didn’t just come to him, and that was well done. I love when he hands things over to Kira and she gets this look on her face that expresses just how snotty she’s going to be at you, it’s fantastic. She delivers her lines well and loves to be in the right, for Bajor of course. As always, Odo and Quark have amazing banter and are the very best “frenemies” to each other. This episode, along with the few before it, also points out the security holes due to taking over a Cardassian station, along with all of the other things that are bound to breakdown after almost 20 years. Anyway, I strangely liked this episode… but mostly because of Renora. Okay, also because Sisko clearly wears his emotions on his sleeve and isn’t afraid to be angry or passionate or any other emotion. As someone with a temper, I give this episode 6.5 seconds of rage.

Favorite Quote from “The Passenger”:

Quark: Poor woman. She’s obviously infatuated with me.

Odo: You’re deluding yourself.

Quark: There’s nothing wrong with a good delusion. I sell them upstairs to dozens of people every day. Besides, there is something in her eyes when she looks at me.

Odo: An allergic reaction, no doubt.

Odo, quick with the lines AND the snark.

So what had happened in “The Passenger” was…: Kira and Bashir are returning in a roundabout when they receive a distress call. Two lifeforms are on board but one dies before they can make it back, though he was a prisoner. Kajada is adamant that Vantika is still alive, he’s done this before. The station begins to have some computer problems which Kajada explains away as Vantika. Meanwhile Odo is dealing with a new Starfleet security officer and has suspicions that Quark is trying to steal the shipment of deuridium.

Kajada opening fire in front of Dax
Not anyone’s problem anymore, no sir.

Turns out Quark was in league with Vantika who is still alive. Bashir and Dax believe Vantika might be hiding in Kajada’s brain, but it turns out he’s hiding in Bashir’s brain. Bashir (as Vantika) and some mercenaries take over the ship with the deuridium but Dax is able to knock Bashir’s mind back to the front and eventually beam out the parts of Vantika into a tiny container that reminds me of the Ghostbusters trap when it has a ghost in it. Kajada, taking no chances, incinerates the container and leaves with the shipment.

…and then I found five dollars: Bashir is the absolute worst. He’s smug at the top of the episode, is still too green to be dealing with dangerous men, and then gets himself brain hijacked and can’t even act like a bad guy. He over enunciates every word, like he’s talking slowly so that even a child could understand him. I will admit it was a nice twist, though I thought it would be awesome if Kajada was chasing herself. While I loved the ending of Kajada shooting him to smithereens, I’m a bit confused why he was even alive in the first place. If she had the authority to kill him without a trial or bringing him back to their planet, how could she just straight up murder him with no one batting an eyelash? I was very underwhelmed by this episode, though I did think the transferring his mind into someone else’s was interesting… oh wait, it’s been done. 3 mercs for Julian, poor soul.

DS9: “Captive Pursuit” and “Q-Less”

Date: Jun 8, 2020

Season 1, Episodes 5 and 6

Musical Accompaniment: Rhiannon Giddens with Francesco Turrisi, Live at the Met

Interstellar News: 3 loads of laundry finished today and the yard finally got mowed, hooray for a handy husband and his riding lawnmower!

Favorite Quote from “Captive Pursuit”:

Tosk: You sleep a full third of your rotation. You rest and relax while you are awake. Alpha quadrant has far too much down time.

O’Brien: My wife would laugh at that. She’s barely seen me in the last three weeks.

Tosk: We are very different, Tosk and O’Brien.

Even during a worldwide pandemic, there is not nearly enough downtime.

So what had happened in “Captive Pursuit” was…: A Gamma Quadrant ship unexpectedly comes out of the wormhole and is damaged, but O’Brien makes a good first impression so he’s tasked with meeting the alien. The lizard like alien identifies himself as Tosk, has the ability to make himself invisible, and is suuuuuuper shifty and immediately begins trying to get to the weapons locker. Tosk and O’Brien work on repairing his ship and poor Tosk needs a sarcasm sign, he’s super adorable. They share a drink and Tosk admits he’s on an adventure, but won’t say more.

baby Groot says "I am Groot"
I am Tosk, any questions? SMURF!

Odo catches Tosk trying to break into the weapons locker, so they have to keep him locked up. Sisko is sure someone will come looking for him and, lo and behold, three aliens come busting into the station to look for Tosk. Tosk, who had asked O’Brien to let him die with honor, is apparently the object of a great hunt. It’s a cultural thing for which Sisko has no fucking tolerance for, but also realizes there’s nothing he can do to stop it… stupid Prime Directive. As Tosk was captured alive he will be dishonored and displayed back on their planet. O’Brien tries to get Tosk to agree to asylum and, when he can’t helps Tosk to escape. The hunt resumes and the wormhole is considered out of bounds for future hunts. Sisko dresses O’Brien down but he’s really secretly pleased.

Mushu from Mulan says "Dishonor on you! Dishonor at your cow!"
I AM THE GREAT AND POWERFUL MUSHU!

…and then I found five dollars: At the top of the episode a Dabo girl is complaining to Sisko about Quark sexually harassing her, and then it’s promptly forgotten and never followed up on… shame on DS9.

Three hunters in red suits and helmets.
They remind me of something, but I just don’t know what.

The husband and I had an interesting conversation about Sisko’s differences from Kirk and Picard. Sisko, aside from being a Black man, is a family man, not a ship’s captain, and not really focused on anything other than making sure the station stays afloat. He’s also working with a lot more non-Starfleet folks and I think he’s sassy as all hell, I really like it. He wasn’t afraid to have a heated argument with the lead hunter, but ultimately understood what he had to do. He also did a fine job of being mad at O’Brien until he was out of sight, I think glad that he has a COO that can do what Sisko couldn’t. I think that they could have “accidentally” allowed Tosk to escape confinement in a different way, but then we wouldn’t get to see “O’Brien: Action Hero”.

O'Brien and Tosk in the background.
I am Tosk.

I am beginning to like Odo not only when he and Quark banter but also in his professionalism and dedication to his work. The way he handled Tosk and deescalated the situation is how conflict should be resolved. I like a security chief who is competent (sorry Worf) and also that all of his staff can actually shoot – even if he is anti-phaser. This was just a wonderful episode with very few flaws and I hope that means that DS9 is finally getting some steam. 8 minutes of rest, for I am Tosk!

Favorite Quote from “Q-Less”:

Q: Preferably dead. It’s a wonder you haven’t offended every sentient race in the galaxy.

Vash: You’re the one who almost got me killed on Errikang Seven. And they weren’t exactly thrilled to see you on Brax either. What did they call you? The God of Lies?

Q: They meant it affectionately.

Good banter between Q and Vash

So what had happened in “Q-Less” was…: Bashir is flirting with a Bajoran woman when he’s called to a medical emergency. The shuttle holding Dax lost power and they barely made it back to the station, but they did find Vash (and Q, though they do not know it yet). Bashir continues his creepy and shameless flirting with Vash, though she promptly makes a trip to store some items in the safety deposit box on the station. O’Brien is thoroughly flummoxed about the issue with the shuttle and then similar things start happening on the station.

Kaa from TJB says "Trust in Me" with his eyes all weird
from The Jungle Book

Vash has apparently left Q and he wants her back. Instead Vash teams up with Quark who is going to be her fence as she auctions off all of those items from the Gamma Quadrant. Q pulls a Kaa and Bashir blows off his date with Vash to sleep but O’Brien identifies Q and notifies Sisko. Sisko and Q meet, it’s so very Q, and Sisko decks Q in a fake boxing match. The station is still experiencing power drains but it’s absolutely not Q, it’s one of Vash’s items. Dax identifies the object, they transport it off station, and it turns into a space stingray… when did I switch to watching Moana? Vash is going to head to Earth, she and Q part ways, but then Quark talks her into going to Tartaras V, oh and Bashir finally wakes up.

Moana's grandmother appears as a stingray
Space stingrays… come on!

…and then I found five dollars: This gave me the vibe of “Encounter at Farpoint” mostly because that’s where we met Q and the space jellyfish and also because Q knew something was up and wasn’t going to tell anyone. No wonder Sisko decks him right in his smug face and it was truly fantastic. Vash gets a better outing here with Quark, it got a little steamy with the ear-touching, than she ever really got with Picard. Quark is a better fit as a fence because he doesn’t care about the history he cares about the profit, which Vash admits here she’ll choose every time. It’s fun to watch her geek out a bit and Quark looking in horror before becoming the auctioneer that gets results.

Q and Vash sitting next to each other
Imagine the possibilities.

This episode makes a little fun of itself where Q calls out the technobabble and Bashir does the “did I miss anything” thing. I find it funny that Bashir opens and closes the episode but doesn’t do much besides flirt and sleep. I also love that Starfleet holds seminars on Q, Q must fucking love that. He certainly has a soft spot for humanity, despite his many claims to the opposite. He knows a lot of human pop culture, has a fascination with wardrobe changes, and certainly loves to banter and hear himself speak. I will say I did figure out it was one of the objects that Vash brought on board but I didn’t really get worried until the space station started moving and nothing the crew did helped. I really wish I got to see Odo and Q interact more, that would have made it perfect. I hear I won’t get to see Q until Voyager, so we’ll “hop hip hooray” 6 times in his honor. I’ll miss you Q!

DS9: “Past Prologue” and “Babel”

Date: June 7, 2020

Season 1, Episodes 3 and 4

Musical Accompaniment: More iTunes foolishness. Artists include: Coldplay, Blink 182, Sister Hazel, and so many Warped Tour compilation albums.

Interstellar News: Today was the last day of celebrating the husband’s birthday weekend and boy was it a hot one today.

Favorite Quotes from “Past Prologue”:

Danar: If you require all vessels to endure such lengthy docking procedures, Commander, you’re going to have a lot of impatient traffic out there.

Sisko: I apologize. We’re still trying to repair all the damage your forces did before they left. It does create unreasonable delays.

Sisko with the professional snark, I approve.

Snarky and Sly Sisko: “Go over my head again and I’ll have yours on a platter.” and “I think, Doctor, you could definitely use a new suit.”

Kira: Either way, I have to betray someone.

Odo: The only important thing is not to betray yourself.

Odo dropping that good knowledge on Kira. Apparently he’s part Constable and part Counselor.

So what had happened in “Past Prologue” was…: Garak, a Cardassian clothier still on station, introduces himself to a very obviously uncomfortable Bashir as everyone believes Garak is a spy. A Cardassian ship is firing on a Bajoran ship and we meet Tahna Los, an old underground friend of Kira’s, who is requesting asylum. The Cardassians wants Tahna but Sisko won’t have any part of it. Kira tries to convince Tahna that the Federation is a necessary stepping stone, but he doesn’t want to hear it.

A man sits across from another man and a woman. The text reads "leave me alooooone."
Bajor telling Cardassia and the Federation to leave them alone, in Tahna’s eyes.

The Duras sisters, B’Etor and Lursa, show up at the station and Odo finds out they are working with Tahna. They also, however, want to sell him to the Cardassians after he pays them so they go to Garak who, in turn, goes to Bashir. Kira knows something is off and she agonizes over betraying her kind, but knows she has to go to Sisko and Bashir is able to fill in the missing gaps. The sisters are delivering the second piece of a bomb and Tahna is going to try to blow up the wormhole because he thinks everyone will then leave Bajor alone. Kira directs him into the wormhole where the bomb detonates into nothingness and Sisko gives Tahna a choice: Federation or Cardassian custody. He chooses… wisely.

From Indiana Jones: "You have chosen... wisely"
One of my favorite lines to quote, well usually the one about choosing poorly.

…and then I found five dollars: Finally, an episode with it all! There’s a complicated political issue, several different plots and schemes, Sisko’s snark meter is at 9, and there are Klingons! Kira understands that Bajor is young and impressionable and can eventually walk on their own if they accept Federation aid for a bit. What Kira doesn’t understand, however, is how to work with Sisko yet. She tattles to the Admiral, who isn’t pleased, and then realizes too late that Sisko is totally on her side. She also puts too much stock in her friendship with Tahna, not comprehending that not all Bajorans may want what she wants. After years of Cardassian occupation I can totally understand that some Bajorans just want to be left alone, even if the Federation only wants to help. The sisters are recognizable villains who are trying to do anything to build up their war chest, and helping Tahna and then betraying him to the Cardassians is twice as nice for them even if it doesn’t wind up paying out. Tahna, in the end, also sees the benefit of choosing the Federation over the Cardassians though I am sure he resents that he has to choose at all. The only thing I can truly hope is that Garak and Bashir continue to have such entertaining conversations. Garak is a pip and Bashir is totally out of his element, I need good banter in my life! 7 antimatter containers for this episode.

Favorite Quote from “Babel”:

Odo: Rom’s an idiot. He couldn’t fix a straw if it was bent.

Quark: You’re right. Rom is an idiot. Remind me to get rid of him tomorrow.

Odo and Quark have some good banter, I think I’m going to like their “frenemy-ship”.

So what had happened in “Babel” was…: Everything on the station is going wrong and O’Brien is having a hell of a day. After he fixes some replicators he begins to not make sense and Bashir diagnoses him with aphasia, but isn’t sure what the cause is. Quark is having trouble with his replicators so he sneaks stuff out of the fixed ones that, apparently, infect the whole ship with the aphasia virus first through the replicator and then through the air. 60% of the station are down and, over the course of the episode, more and more people become infected including Dax and Jake.

Sisko holding Jake's head
“Roll linger when life.”

Bashir finds out it was engineered by the Bajorans and was set up 18 years ago when the station was first built and somehow O’Brien triggered it to go off, Kira is put in charge of tracking down an antidote. Bashir is infected, Kira finds the medical assistant of the guy who made the virus, and Sisko and Odo try to stop a ship from leaving and causing major structural damage. Sisko and Kira both go down with the virus but Quark steps in to allow Odo to send the ship off into space with 10 seconds left to spare in proper Trek fashion. The assistant finds the antidote and everyone gets back to normal.

…and then I found five dollars: This entire episode reminded me of what happened to Alan in an episode of Boston Legal, a show that Shatner was on. At first I thought this was similar to a TOS episode and then remembered it was Denny Crane (Shatner’s character in BL) and not Captain Kirk, oh well.

I promise, the whole scene is worth it. IT IS CHEESE!

As someone who is still separated from loved ones due to Covid-19, I thought this episode was a little eerie. A virus with no cure, varying incubation periods and severity depending on who it infected and at what time, a bar being considered an “essential service” during a lock down quarantine, and the doctor becoming sick before he’s able to find a cure. I was thinking to myself how interesting it was Bashir was fine and then WHAM, word salad. I also love that Odo and Quark were the last two standing, though of course Sisko and Kira miraculously lasted quite long.

Kira and O'Brien talking to each other.
I am quite flower units about you.

I was hoping to find out more about how Dax was feeling about being a woman, and honestly about her in general… I’m sure I will in time. I absolutely loved how Sisko became Dad and then went right back to being Commander, but still had time to check in on his son. Kira is super bad ass and is determined to do whatever it takes to stop the whole station from going under, even if she’s going to be arrested or reprimanded for it. Nothing motivates people faster than being infected by something that they may be able to develop a cure for, and it was just so lucky for him that Bashir was super close to coming up with the antidote. I also think it was an interesting twist that it was Bajorans who were screwed over by their past selves as the ones who installed the virus were likely captured before they could enact it and I’m sure we’ll continue to see how deep the hurt runs over the course of the show. While this episode was far from perfect, it was a lot of fun. I cannot, however, get over how DUMB the nurse was. She knew that everyone was affected with aphasia but kept asking “what” when anyone affected talked to her. Come on woman, you’re a NURSE! Oh well, maybe she needs 7 more years of medical school or something.

DS9: “A Man Alone”

Date: Jun 6, 2020

Season 1, Episode 2

Musical Accompaniment: A violin/cello version of The Piano Guys

Interstellar News: Apparently Netflix has a weird viewing order, but that’s the one I’m using. Was only able to watch one episode today because we celebrated by husband’s birthday with his brother and our good friend. We had French dip sandwiches, garlic butter Parmesan potatoes, and German chocolate cake for dessert.

Favorite Quote:

Dax: Steamed azna will put years on your life.

Sisko: Dax, I don’t want years on my life if I can only eat steamed azna. Sautéed, rolloped, fricasseed, fine. But not steamed. I’ve missed your steamed azna.

Dax and Sisko sharing their widely different views on food. I’m with Sisko on this, I enjoy food.

Sage Sisko: “Do not condemn this man because he is different than you are.”

So what had happened was…: Bashir shamelessly flirts with Dax, who later tells him Trill are above romance and such as much as possible, and then he fails her brain teaser. Odo and Quark discuss their different takes on relationships; Quark is in it for the physicality and Odo does not want to compromise… especially when it comes to Klingon opera. A Bajoran named Ibudan arrives and gets into an altercation with Odo, the man has recently been released from prison. Sisko tells Odo he can’t do anything unless Ibudan breaks the rules, but Ibudan winds up stabbed and dead before he could get to the happy ending of his massage on the holosuite.

The stabbing from Psycho (1960)
You know the sound that needs to go with this clip…

O’Brien and Keiko argue about their being stationed on DS9 but Keiko eventually decides to begin a school on the station, she was inspired by Jake and Nog getting into trouble because they were bored. She meets with the other parents and try to get them to agree to send their children. Eventually she gets four students, though both Jake and Nog’s fathers tell their kids to stay away from each other.

Jake and Nog meeting
Two pre-teen boys will absolutely not get into any trouble, nope… not at all.

Odo begins to look like the prime suspect, so Sisko pulls him temporarily. The other folks on the station begin to harass Odo, presuming his guilt, and start yelling at him for being a shape-shifter and different. Quark, surprisingly, stands up for him. Bashir figures out that the proteins in the victim’s room are of a clone, and it was another clone that was killed by the real Ibudan in order to frame Odo. Odo finds the real Ibudan, who gets sent back to prison, and the clone actually gets to being its new life.

…and then I found five dollars: With everything going on in the world, I thought the larger message of this episode is still very appropriate. People are, generally, innocent until proven guilty. The courts are generally the place where judgements are made, it is not up for the public to be judge, jury, and executioner so to speak. Also, just because someone is different does not make them guilty or otherwise deficient in any way. Odo is able to change shape and that might be different, and slightly gross that his natural state is a puddle of goo, but he has the right to live without being harassed for his differences. We don’t choose how we are born, who we are born to, when and where we are born, so it’s not right to make assumptions based on solely those things. I was also hoping, based on his conversation with Quark, that his species was asexual in some way. Instead I get a TOS era rant on how men always have to compromise to what the woman in the relationship wants, like that’s the only kind of relationship there is. Maybe there’s still hope for Dax to be Ace.

Asexual pride flace
We like garlic bread, cake, and dragons.

The rest of the episode, however, was a bit of a mess. I’m already sick of Bashir hardcore flirting with Dax, as she is clearly uninterested. It would be different if he was simply interested in her Trill nature and wanted to get to know more about her as a friend, but he’s like the creep who wants to sleep with someone who has an oddity about them just to say he did. I will admit, however, that I’m glad he had a bit more to do this episode and he was useful. Though the fact that he just grew a clone in a lab and it got to go off on its merry way is, distressing to say the least. I mean we don’t even see it, Sisko just offhand mentions it in the station log, super lame.

Dolly, the cloned sheep
Is that your twin or your clone… cause there’s a difference ya’know.

While I love that they showed O’Brien and Keiko arguing, it’s a totally natural thing that happens when you have to move because of your partner’s job, I’m a bit sad that Keiko wasn’t able to find something in her wheelhouse. I mean couldn’t she go down to Bajor and help them rehabilitate the planet? I also loved O’Brien’s suggestion of an arboretum on station. However, sometimes a change of career can be the thing you need. I thought I was going to be an engineering when I graduated high school and then college, but instead I became a professor and academic advisor. What started as an undergraduate teaching assistant position turned into a whole new world of possibilities for me and ultimately I found a profession that I am passionate about, a true vocation. Keiko said she always wanted to try it, and maybe she’ll be amazing… or can teach the kids about plants. While I hate the connotation that it’s the wife that needs to find a new job, and a woman who becomes a teacher, I hope this eventually turns out to be something fulfilling for Keiko.

Fred taking off the villain's mask
Oh Fred.

I’m still not sure how I feel about the Scooby Doo ending where Odo pulls the mask off to reveal the real Ibudan, but I didn’t quite see it coming so it gets a “C” for effort. I can’t see more than 5 slices of German chocolate cake for this episode.

TA Out!

DS9: “Emissary: Parts 1 & 2”

Date: June 5, 2020

Season 1, Episode 1

Musical Accompaniment: Man of Steel soundtrack by Hans Zimmer

Interstellar News: First, I want to wish a very Happy 34th Birthday to my husband. We purposefully planned to start DS9 today as it’s his favorite of all the Treks. Second, as of today, I have watched 225 hours and 33 minutes of Star Trek. That is 287 episodes, where movies count as one episode, for a grand total of 9 and a half days of my life. I also made an update to the Watch Order and spreadsheet.

I am also introducing a few new categories: “So what had happened was…” will be a quick summary of the episode, “…and then I found five dollars:” will be my thoughts on the episode that aren’t included in the summary. There will be others for favorite quotes by individuals. So far I have these three: Sly, Snarky, and Sage Sisko, O’Brien’s Ordeals, Kick-ass Kira, and Dax, She’s Too Old For You Bro.

Favorite Quotes:

Gul Dukat : Allow me to assure you that we only want to be helpful in this difficult transition. You’re far from the Federation fleet, alone in this remote outpost, with poor defense systems. Your Cardassian neighbors will be quick to respond to any problems you might have.

Sisko: We’ll try to keep the dog off your lawn.

Sassy Sisko is sassy.

Sly, Snarky, and Sage Sisko: “Each day affects the next.” and “It is the unknown that defines our existence.”

So what had happened was…: We open with the events of “The Best of Both Worlds” from First Officer Benjamin Sisko’s point of view on the Saratoga, where he is able to rescue his son Jacob but loses his wife Jennifer. Three years later he’s tasked to be the Starfleet representative on the former Cardassian station, Deep Space Nine, which is close to Bajor. O’Brien will be his Chief of Operations, but several new faces are introduced. Major Kira is a Bajoran and the First Officer, Odo is a shape-shifter and head of security, Quark is a Ferengi who operates a bar and gambling facility, Lieutenant Dax is a Trill and will be at the science station, and Dr. Bashir will be the Chief Medical Officer.

The cast of Deep Space Nine, including Worf, Dax, Bashier, Quark, O'Brien, Odo, Sisko, Jake, and Kira.
I know Worf won’t be here for a while, I miss him already…

The station is a mess but Sisko needs to meet with Picard, which is awkward. After the meeting Sisko uses his knowledge of Ferengi plea bargaining to get Quark to stay and run the Promenade as people will need a place to blow off some steam after work. Sisko also meets with Kai Opaka, a Bajoran spiritual leader, and she shows him the Orbs and tasks him with finding the Celestial Temple. After the Enterprise leaves, a Cardassian ship arrives and Gul Dukat comes aboard, his men gamble, and they leave. Dax and Sisko take a shuttle craft through a wormhole that isn’t like one they’ve ever seen, it’s been constructed, and it takes them to the Gamma quadrant. Dax is sent back to DS9 but Sisko stays and attempts to communicate with the entities who live in the wormhole.

Danny Ocean "I only lied about being a thief, I don't do that anymore"
When Quark introduces himself and is accused of being a thief, I immediately thought of this.

O’Brien is tasked with moving the station so they can lay claim on the wormhole. Dukat’s ship enters the wormhole and the other Cardassians do not believe Kira that it exists, so they engage in an attack. Meanwhile, Sisko is trying to explain linear time to the aliens he’s encountered and realizes he never learned how to live without his wife and he’s been carrying around his grief and anger for too long. The wormhole opens back up and Sisko’s ship is helping Dukat’s out, which allows an end to the battle, and the entities within allow Sisko to use the wormhole.

…and then I found five dollars: So we already had an episode in TNG called “The Emissary“, where we meet my beloved K’Ehleyr, what is this mess of reusing an old title? Is this like “THE Ohio State University”, sigh. Also, WHY ARE THERE NO BRAS IN SPACE?! At several points in the episode I uttered “fucking Cardassians”, then looked at my husband and asked if I’m going to say that a lot… he said “yes”.

An image of a male Cardassian from the neck up.
shakes fist…

As this is a new show and season, I watched the credits… nothing super exciting. I think this was a good episode that introduced everyone in the cast as well as could be expected given the number of people. Picard and O’Brien have their cutesy goodbye. Picard doesn’t steal the show in any way and O’Brien gets to have his try at 20th century technology hacks on 24th century equipment (when he kicks the transporter like you would an old CRT television to get it to work). We get to see Odo being super useful and good at his job, a Black man raising his son alone and being in charge of nothing that turns into an important something, and a Bajoran woman who is feisty as hell and I can already tell loyal to her cause and her people. This will be a huge departure from the previous Treks, but as I enjoyed Babylon 5 I think I will come to like this as well. For a first, and double, episode… I’m setting this a 6 pieces of cake, of an unusual size.
