VOY: “Counterpoint”

Date: December 16, 2020

Season 5, Episode 10

Musical Accompaniment: On songs that begin with the letter ‘S’ and I didn’t realize how many songs were named “Satellite”!

Interstellar News: I made a lemon cream cake tonight, mostly as an excuse to finish the lemon curd in my fridge. It was delicious. Also, it’s my WordPress anniversary! Happy one year to this site!!

TL;DR: Voyager is traveling through Devore territory and must submit to their inspections, which includes hiding telepaths (crew and refugees) in the transporter pattern buffers each time. The lead Inspector, Kashyk, catches up with them and says he wants to defect. They find Professor Torat and play good cop/bad cop in order to find out about the wormhole that will help the telepaths escape the Devore. They work on finding out where it will show up next and counterpoint is the key. Kashyk explains why he’s defecting and gets closer to Janeway. They have to head through a sensor net and almost elude it but trigger it on the second pass and now it’s a race against time. Kashyk heroically decides to go back in order to save Voyager, smooches Janeway, and off he goes. Voyager submits to their fourth inspection and, when they are alone, Janeway tells him where the wormhole is. At this revelation Kashyk double crosses Janeway and tries to destroy the portal, but it’s Janeway who was lying because she never really trusted Kashyk. She had already sent all of the refugee telepaths and two shuttles out to the wormhole and they make it through safely. Kashyk realizes he’s been defeats and orders Voyager to leave their space.

Favorite Quote:

Janeway: Then what do you want, Inspector?

Kashyk: Call me Kashyk, please. I never liked that title. In fact, I’ve left it behind.

Janeway: Did somebody offer you a promotion, or are you just having a bad day?

Kashyk: I’m defecting, and I need your help.

The chemistry between them is lots of fun.
Kashyyyk wookies
When I first heard the Inspector’s name, this is all I thought of each and every time.

“I’d be glad to discuss that and any other philosophical issue you care to raise if you would just slow down and talk.”: I loved everything about this episode except for two things. First, the dude who played Kashyk was delightful but everything he said came out slimy and not genuine. Second, at the very end… WHERE DID THEY HIDE TUVOK, VORIK, and the BETAZOID for the last inspection? Obviously they didn’t go on the shuttles through the wormhole but they couldn’t have been in plain sight but they also couldn’t stay in the pattern buffers because of the degradation… so where were they?!?! Other than these two things, I absolutely loved Janeway and Kashyk. They had the good cop/bad cop routine down pat like they’ve known each other for years and their chemistry throughout the rest of the episode played well. I legit gasped when Kashyk turned on Janeway and then was reminded of “Scorpion” when Janeway turned the tables right back on him. It was such a good lead up and I totally didn’t see it coming, though it made perfect sense. I also loved them working on how to find the wormhole, the bit where the security guard smirked when Kashyk tried for a “nightcap”, and the damn barrels of vegetables instead of telepaths at the end. It was glorious and delightful and I enjoyed it lots. 9 games of seven card stud for this episode.

VOY: “Thirty Days”

Date: December 15, 2020

Season 5, Episode 9

Musical Accompaniment: Now on songs that begin with the letter ‘R’, like this gem:

Andrew W.K.’s “Ready To Die”

Interstellar News: Christmas is in 10 days! 2020 is over in 16 days!! I am no where close to being done with Voyager!!!

TL;DR: We open with Paris being demoted to Ensign and sentenced to 30 days in the Brig. After Neelix brings him some food a few days later, he decides to start writing a letter to his father explaining his incarceration. In flashbacks we see Voyager encounter an ocean being held together by a containment field where the Moneans live. Paris has, apparently, always been fascinated by the water and Voyager wants to help the Moneans with their problem. Paris, Kim, Seven, and Riga dive down in the modified Delta Flyer and encounter a 100, 000 year old reactor as well as a giant sea creature. The reactor is the cause of the problems because the Moneans have been mining oxygen. Paris and Riga are passionate in their assertions that immediate action needs to be taken, but the Counsel only promises to take it under advisement. They decide to shut down the refineries anyway, but are stopped at the last minute by Janeway… which is where we come back to Paris getting demoted. He finishes the letter and tells the computer to send it when they’re in range of the Federation.

Favorite Quote:

Paris: Call me Skipper.

Kim: Sailor talk. You’ll get used to it.

Seven of Nine: I think not.

Seven is fantastic and you can’t tell me otherwise. Her attitude sucks, but her lines are well delivered.
an otter saying "find a waterworld. it otter be nice"
I do love a good pun, and an adorable otter.

“We can’t expect an entire society to change because we think they should.”: So we’ve gotten to the “don’t mess with the ocean” episode. Didn’t they make a whole movie about that already? There were some bits here that were brilliant. The Captain Proton bit with the twins was wonderful, especially when Kim continues to be ridiculous with his choice of women. The reveal that an old culture moved their ocean out into space and created this reactor that worked perfectly for 100,000 years only to be almost destroyed within 300 years is too close to the truth. When you look at how much damage humans have done to the Earth in their relatively short time on the planet, it’s staggering. I love seeing enthusiastic Paris, just like with the old car floating through space, it shows he cares about something other than himself. I also really enjoyed the guy who plated Riga, as he was fabulous in White Collar. The part I don’t get is WHY ARE THERE STILL WAYS TO TAKE A SHUTTLE OUT OF THE SHIP UNAUTHORIZED?!?! Didn’t Tuvok swear he was going to put a stop to it? I wonder if Paris will be back to his normal rank in the next episode, le sigh. 3 pips for this episode, though the sea monster was bad ass.

VOY: “Nothing Human”

Date: December 14, 2020

Season 5, Episode 8

Musical Accompaniment: I am now on songs that begin with the letter ‘O’

Interstellar News: All gifts are now wrapped or en route, all cards are written out and stamped, and the kitchen is partly reorganized. What a day.

TL;DR: Voyager is hit with a massive energy wave and have a new download, which is a screechy alien noise they can’t decipher. They head to the point of origin and find a ship with an injured alien, so they beam it to sick bay. Unfortunately it latches on to Torres and the Doctor needs to figure out how to separate them. Kim works on creating a holographic expert in exobiology, based on a Cardassian named Crell Moset that the EMH picked out. Torres is not happy about having a holographic Cardassian work on her and a Bajoran engineer named Tabor is outright disgusted because Moset killed Bajorans to further his medical research. Janeway decides that Moset can help, anything to save Torres, and after leaves it to the EMH to decide what to do. Moset and the Doctor help separate Torres from the alien and they are able to beam the alien to a nearby ship when they came to his aid. The Doctor ultimately decides to delete Moset’s program and information from the database.

Favorite Quote:

EMH: I didn’t come here to debate the issue with you, Crell. I came here to inform you of my decision. It is my judgment that the Medical Consultant Program and all the algorithms contained therein shall be deleted from the database. In light of recent evidence I cannot in good conscience utilize research that was derived from such inhuman practices.

Moset: In good conscience? What about the well-being of your crew? You’re confronted by new forms of life every day, many of them dangerous. You need me. Delete my program and you violate the first oath you took as a physician. Do no harm.

EMH: Do no harm. You have no right to say those words. Computer.

Moset: You can erase my program, Doctor, but you can never change the fact that you’ve already used some of my research. Where was your conscience when B’Elanna was dying on that table? Ethics? Morality? Conscience? Funny how they all go out the airlock when we need something. Are you and I really so different?

EMH: Computer, delete Medical Consultant Program and all related files.

Moset and the Doctor arguing before the Doctor pulls the plug.
the alien from this episode
This guy thought Torres looked extra tasty. Must be all of her duplicated organs.

“I don’t care if he’s the nastiest man who ever lived, as long as he can help us save B’Elanna.”: In “The Big Goodbye” Picard has to learn a super complicated alien language in order to interact with some insect-like aliens. In “Sanctuary“, the universal translators take some time, but eventually figure out bits and pieces. In this episode, however, all we get is this terrible screeching noise that freaked out my dog and cats every time it played. I loved so much that the Doctor doesn’t give one iota of a fuck about if this dude was a Cardassian or a Nazi or what, until he does. It’s a totally normal reaction to have as a hologram, at first, until he realizes the depth of the depravity that Moset engaged in. What I disliked is that he used Moset’s help for Torres and then said “OK now I’m deleting you, so you can’t help anyone else”. I would have totally been okay with the Doctor saying “look, we’re lost in the DQ and I’ll take all of the help I can get along the way, but once we’re back in Federation territory I’m deleting you”. I would have also been okay with him saying “nope, I’ve got my holographic morals and I’ll help Torres as if you never existed”. I would also, also be okay with him CHOOSING ANOTHER EXOBIOLOGIST for crying out loud. There were so many other choices here and the one they went with was just as bad as keeping him on even though he was just a hologram. 4 warm, fuzzy socks for this episode.

VOY: “Infinite Regress”

Date: December 13, 2020

Season 5, Episode 7

Musical Accompaniment: I’ve plowed through a few letters and am now onto songs that begin with the letter ‘M’ in my 4-star playlist, about halfway through the list.

Interstellar News: It’s still my birthday month, but I am now post-birthday. I watched a wonderful movie this morning with a dear friend, had a wonderful dinner with some family, and got in a late night grocery run when we were the only ones in the store.

TL;DR: Seven’s regeneration is interrupted and she stalks her way into the kitchen in order to trash it and grab some meat, though her reflection shows a different alien. Voyager alters course to avoid Borg debris and Neelix is concerned about “the midnight snacker”. Naomi follows Seven around, as she is intent on becoming a Captain’s Assistant, and witnesses Seven’s personality change. Seven “comes to” and heads to Engineering, where she turns into a Klingon and bites Torres. Tuvok takes her to sick bay and we see a piece of Borg technology, a viniculum, floating in space. Seven goes through many more personality changes and the crew tries to disable the viniculum. It turns out that Species 6339 created a virus to try and disable the Borg from the inside out, so they try to see if they’ll help Seven. 6339 do not want to help and they want to put the viniculum back in the wreckage so it will be assimilated. 6339 eventually fires on Voyager, Torres disables it to save Seven while Tuvok mind melds with Seven, and they space the viniculum for 6339 to have as they bugger off. Seven recovers and decides to mentor Naomi.

Favorite Quote:

Seven of Nine: You hope to achieve this goal by emulating me?

Naomi: Are you mad?

Seven of Nine: No. There are many on this crew that would benefit from your example.

Naomi: So you’ll teach me?

Seven of Nine: Your objective is admirable. However, your neocortical development is incomplete. You would require several months of accelerated growth in a Borg maturation chamber.

Also… “Naomi Wildman, subunit of Ensign Samantha Wildman. State your intentions.” I cackled at this.
United States of Tara's last three personalities
if you haven’t watched The United States of Tara you should because it’s quite wonderful.

“Does this qualify as our second date?Just think of me as your chaperone.”: Species 6339 tries to pull off what was mentioned in “I, Borg“, get something into the Borg Collective that will cause it to destroy itself. This, however, was only a small part of the plot as everyone was concerned about Seven. Seven did a FANTASTIC job of morphing into each different personality. She was able to show orc, young girl, Klingon male, Vulcan, and even a human mother among her many personalities. Seven was also able to project how much pain she was in, which led to three great supporting roles. The Doctor tries his hardest to fix Seven medically and to be there to see what is happening first hand. He also tries to be the voice of reason. Janeway has to play Captain and Mom here, but she does her best to balance both of those roles. Tuvok, however, has the best supporting role here. He not only walks with a purpose (instead of running) toward the danger that is Seven, but he also immediately figures out what’s happening to her and acts accordingly. He also decides that the logical thing to do is meld, despite the danger, as it’s what is safest and likely the only option at this point. I’m not saying this episode is without its problems, like how did Seven’s neural pattern just suddenly reappear, but it was a fun delve into multiple personalities. It also shows the tenacious Naomi and the bit at the end where Seven decides to take her on is just heartwarming. 8 sleepy doggos a-snooze in their little beds for this episode.

Musical accompaniment: Since I don’t want the Intellectual Property cops up my butt, please watch this clip before you decide to sing to me:

“It took two people to write that song?”

Interstellar News: It’s my 34th birthday!

I share this day with Frank Sinatra, Our Lady of Guadalupe, and at least five good friends.

my FB avatar with a birthday hat
tanti auguri a te! Happy birthday to you!

As we’re in the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic, we had a very low key birthday for me. My Dad called at 11:00 am, when I was officially born via C-section in 1986. Lunch was a car date with the husband, using a gift card I recently found while cleaning out my wallet. We worked on a puzzle for a bit, had a friend drive by to say hi, and then I had a video chat with a dear friend after our family walk. We did a video dinner with my two dear friends in New York while we both ordered Indian take out and bullshitted for about an hour. I spoke with many of my friends and family either through posts, texts, or phone calls throughout the day. I also was sung to by not one, not two, but three of my friends today and several of my family members.

It’s still hard to know I won’t hear from my mom or any of my grandparents. It was also difficult to not be with all of my loved ones, especially since I had such a wonderful birthday last year and many of the previous years. It’s just so hard to get excited about this birthday or any of the upcoming holidays. Anyway, I’ll be back to Trek writing tomorrow as I did get two episodes in today… I’m just tired and enjoying the last few hours of my actual birthday.

TA Out.
